News from the inexhaustible Julia

Julia and one of her quirky cows, Miss Moola La, are working with Breast Cancer Awareness and Mind Wales to raise one million and £1. More info here.

Julia says:
"Looks like it is taking off, just heard that one of the consultants from the hospital will be coming to the launch as well as Kirsty Williams, shame it is so far for you guys to come.
"Did I tell you that I am now signed up with Buckingham Fine Art Publishers? They will promote my work as limited editions, but I get to keep copyright and originals. If it takes off looks like I will have to buy a posh frock for the Dorchester."
Read all about it on Julia's website.

Picturemakers meeting and Group crit

At the November meeting we developed our programme of exhibitions for 2012 and 2013 (for details, click "Exhibitions" tab above). Reports were given by Steph and Shelley on the progress of the Ceredigion Art Trail, which we are seeking to become involved in.

We concluded with a brief group criticism of recent works, some of which are shown below.

Ludlow Art Society

I recently travelled over to Ludlow on a dark and stormy night - and got lost twice en route - to give a talk about my work to Ludlow Art Society. One of the Society's members, Lesley Connolly, had attended several of my Lifelong Learning courses (along with her friends Stan and David), and asked if I would mind speaking at one of their monthly meetings. This trio has supported Lifelong Learning by attending several courses in mid Wales, often requiring long journeys, but always managing to enliven classes and produce some superb work.
The turnout was very good and the audience didn't let me leave without one or two challenging questions - only fair as I had presented them with quite a difficult visual quiz!
You can see images on the Ludlow Art Society blog.

Back to school

Earlier this month (October) Dot and Harry spent a morning in Borth Primary school, helping the children to draw landscapes. The kids were full of enthusiasm: looking at our sketchbooks ("How did you draw that?"), learning about mark-making (they loved loud stippling), and walking down to the cliff top to draw the view over Cardigan Bay.

Dot had started by finding those who reckoned they couldn't draw, and told them that if they could write their names, they COULD draw. It transpired that those who claimed to be non-drawers produced the most interesting work: one child turned his back on the beautiful view and drew a row of parked cars, another concentrated on the abstract patterns of the spume on the waves, and several combined plan and aerial views for various parts of the landscape. In the end – you've guessed it – the adults learnt as much as the children did.

We can't show you photos of the kids, so here's a nice view of Borth Beach instead.
